UNPLANNED PREGNANCY

The body of work, “Unplanned Pregnancy” tells a personal journey through motherhood when a pregnancy arrives unexpectedly. It expresses the struggles that a new mother can undergo emotionally, physically and mentally. For some, this motherhood journey is happy but for others it can be the opposite.

The body of work is an installation of charcoal drawings on ripped canvas cloth. Some drawings are in black and white with no color while others have hints of color. The color is present in some of the works to help communicate different points in the mother’s journey. Some points are colorful and full of life while others are dark and dull. It’s like the mother is trying to get the life back in her and break free of the sadness she has undergone through pregnancy and postpartum.

Each work is made on ripped cloth canvas. Pregnancy and child birth can wear down a woman’s body and the tattered, torn, bruised and ripped up cloth reflects this. The different works on cloth are collaged next to each other on the wall. Some are overlapping and hard to read. While some are nice and easy to see. This is done to reflect how a mothers journey through  motherhood can be hectic and all over the place. It can leave some parts forgotten or hazy and out of order while other parts are clear as day and a long lasting memory.

The journey to motherhood is a constant battle and hopefully this personal story shared through my body of work will touch other moms struggling out there and make them not feel alone in their battles.
